Community Voices: Lisa Barton
Meet Lisa Barton who has been involved in animal welfare in her Indiana community for the past 18 years helping people and pets. She has in the past volunteered for ReTails in Indiana.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
The most rewarding part of my work as someone who cares for and advocates for the welfare of animals is being able to get others engaged, as well as knowing that every little bit of work helps to make things better for our non-human friends who deserve to thrive.
In your opinion, how does community wisdom play a role in your advocacy and work in animal welfare?
Community wisdom and using connections within my community is essential. I am not an expert when it comes to the care of each and every animal in need. In order to make sure those needs are met, that takes a network of folks with a wide range of knowledge and ability all working towards the same goals. Being able to make people aware of the community challenges and resource needs takes collective wisdom and insight.
What would you like to see for the future of animal welfare and human well-being?
In the simplest terms—equity, liberation, health and safety. The ability of all creatures on this planet to live life to its fullest and contribute to the evolution of our planet. Also, continued strong and consistent work to improve our environment and do whatever we can do undo or stop the horrible effects of climate change as a result of polluting the earth for people and animals.
